Community-based tourism in Thailand honoured by UK’s Environment Secretary

London. 2008 Award Winner From Relief to Self Reliance, a community-based tourism (CBT) initiative working in tsunami-hit villages of Thailand’s North Andaman coast, met the UK's Secretary of State for Environment, Hilary Benn, to receive their Award.

SEED had supported them to come to London to attend the 2008 World Trade Market, enabling the partnership to make contacts in the tourism industry and publicise the CBT initiative. In Thailand, a SEED community study and subsequent participatory planning workshop provided the opportunity to assess the current CBT situation while highlighting the importance of shared responsibility and involving all members of the community. A short report of the activities is available here (pdf)
