A group of organisations have joined forces to create two farmers co-operatives, thereby providing a much-needed channel to market and distribute milk and other agricultural products, improve production methods and strengthen local incomes.
The initiative’s overall goal is an increased high quality production through improved farming techniques (e.g. high quality seeds, fertilizers) to provide a higher income for its members. The Farmers Union plans to create two cooperatives for the Shirak region: one for milk production and the one for agricultural products such as vegetables and corn. The association intends to reduce its members’ production costs by purchasing higher amounts, reducing transportation and storage costs. It will also help through effective negotiations with vendees and quality marketing. Finally the Farmer Union can provide support and represent its member’s interests.
To ensure the long-term future of this innovative, locally-led partnership for sustainable development, additional contacts, financing opportunities and communication and marketing networks are important.
In particular, the following support is needed:
• International networking for technical and financial support.
• Access to funding: micro credits
• Capacity development on creating a value chain system that would involve partnership building with processor, service provider and consumer
• Access to expertise, technical training and certification
• Business plan development.
