A regional NGO, working with local government and a carbon credit network, is creating locally-owned micro-businesses that make charcoal briquettes from local agri-waste, which would have been burned in the fields. In the process they are reducing local air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions.
The initiative seeks to achieve the following goals:
• Commercialise the charcoal briquettes in Tupi and expects replication in other parts of the Philippines and across the world.
• Create employment opportunities and local enterprises.
• Reduce open field burning of agri-wastes, garden wastes and tree-prunings.
• Promote environment-friendly renewable cooking technologies, such as clean and energy efficient cooking stoves and fuel for households and food businesses.
To ensure the long-term future of this innovative, locally-led partnership for sustainable development, additional contacts, financing opportunities and communication and marketing networks are important. In particular, the following support is needed:
• Capacity development: feasibility studies, business planning, management and development.
• Access to technical expertise: research and development for efficient briquette production and carbon trading.
• Building a marketing network.
