2009 SEED winner from the Cook Islands expands to Africa and Asia
The initiative ‘Innovative fish and algae aqua-farming’ in the Cook Islands was one of the 2009 SEED Winners. The initiative co-farms fish with shellfish and micro-algae in inland ponds, drawing on the tropical climate, natural nutrient cycles and new harvesting technologies.
The initiative contributes to:
- food security
- expanding the local and regional economy
- income and employment generation
- reduction of pressure on natural fish stocks.
Since they received the SEED Award, the initiative has received approval from the Government of Nigeria to apply their aquaculture with fresh water fish & microalgae in the Niger Delta as a part of the Nigerian Delta Development Corporation-funded project.
Recently the initiative also started working on a USAID-funded oyster/fish project for Pakistan.
