SEED Executive Director launches the 2010 SEED awards at the African Ministerial Conference on the Environment (AMCEN) in Bamako, Mali
Helen Marquard, SEED’s Executive Director has joined the 12th session of the African Ministerial Conference on the Environment (AMCEN) in Bamako, Mali (20-25 June). During a UNEP-hosted event on the green economy at AMCEN, she launched the 2010 Awards for entrepreneurship in sustainable development.
In 2010, as part of a larger EU funded project on the Green Economy, the SEED Award will have a special focus on Africa, with up to 20 awards being made to promising social and environmental entrepreneurs in Burkina Faso, Egypt, Ghana, Kenya, Rwanda, and Senegal. In addition, there will be up to 10 awards in South Africa, and up to 5 elsewhere in the developing world.
AMCEN was established in 1985 as a forum to strengthen co-operation on environmental issues between African governments. AMCEN is mandated to:
- provide advocacy for environmental protection in Africa;
- ensure that basic human needs are met adequately and in a sustainable manner;
- ensure that social and economic development is realized at all levels;
- to ensure that agricultural activities and practices meet the food security needs of the region.
